Picayune Sentinel Substack help, Frequently Asked Questions

I fairly often get these basic questions from subscribers. If you have others, either let me know or consult Substack’s pretty good help pages

Q . How do I change my email address for delivery of the Picayune Sentinel?

Click on “Edit” in the Email section.

Enter your new email address and click “Save”. This will change the email address on all of your Substack subscriptions.

Q. I’m signed up/subscribed but am not getting the Picayune Sentinel. What can I do?

Try testing your email address to see if it’s working for the Sentinel.  Navigate to  https://ericzorn.substack.com/account/email-test  and select, “Send test email.”

If you see a “You have disabled email delivery for this account” message when testing the email delivery, this means that you’ve unsubscribed from the publication. To receive emails again, you’ll need to re-subscribe  by going  to https://ericzorn.substack.com/subscribe

Check your email settings

  • If you have Gmail, check your Promotions tab. If a newsletter is in that section, move it to your Primary inbox.
  • Make sure that your email address on file is correct.
  • Check your spam folder to see if emails have gone there. If so, make sure to “mark as not spam” in your email client.
  • Add ericzorn@substack.com  to your contact list.
  • Send an email to ericzorn@substack.com. This can often cause intermediate email filters to allow incoming messages.
  • If you are on a corporate or government email account, talk to your IT department and tell them to whitelist ericzorn@substack.com. They often have email filters that are out of your individual control and can quickly resolve the issue.

There may be an email block

Go to your Substack account and see if there’s an “Email block” message from Substack.

Follow the instructions on how to clear the email block.

If you’re still not receiving any Substack emails, contact the Support team here.

Check your Settings on the Substack App

If you have the Substack app installed, head to the Notifications section in your Settings.

If you have “Smart Notifications” selected, this means that you’ll primarily receive push notifications about new posts in the app and may receive email newsletters if you haven’t opened the Substack app in a while.

Prefer to receive new posts via email and the Substack app?  Select the “In email and app” option.

If you’d prefer to only receive posts via email, select “Only in email”.

With these two options, your email newsletters should resume.

Tip: Posts can always be viewed on the web version  of the Picayune Sentinel.

Q How do I update my payment/credit card information?

1. Navigate to your Substack account Settings at this link: https://substack.com/settings

2. Under Subscriptions, select the Picayune Sentinel and in the Payment information section, click on “Edit” next to Payment method.

 Q. How do I set up a gift subscription?

Once you purchase a gift subscription, the gift recipient will receive an email and be able to access paid content immediately. If they don’t have a Substack account, one will be created for them automatically.

What happens when the gift subscription ends?

Before the gift subscription ends, we’ll send reminder emails to the recipient on your behalf a week before and a day before it ends with the opportunity to purchase a paid subscription or subscribe as a free reader. If no action is taken, the recipient will be automatically unsubscribed   on the expiration date.

Q. How do I unsubscribe?

For an unpaid subscription, scroll to the bottom of any email you’ve received and select “Unsubscribe.”

Once you click “Unsubscribe” a new window will open and you’ll need to select “Turn off emails”.

Or you can unsubscribe through your Substack account. Navigate to your Settings page via www.substack.com/settings or select your profile icon and select “Settings” from the drop-down menu.

To cancel a paid subscription, navigate to your settings page —  www.substack.com/settings — and under subscriptions, click on the Picayune Sentinel. Scroll to the Account actions section and click on the link next to “To cancel your paid subscription, click here”.

On the next page, select “Cancel Subscription”.

Once you cancel your subscription, it will terminate at the end of the billing period and you will not be charged again. If you’re on a 7-day trial, the trial will end as soon as you cancel the subscription.

Note: Your paid subscriber benefits will continue until the end of the time period you’ve paid for. Once your paid subscription ends, you’ll become a free subscriber.
Can I pause my paid subscription instead?

Yes! If you’d like to pause your subscription, click “Pause Subscription” and select from the drop-down box how many months you’d like charges to be stopped for.

Your subscription to the publication will be paused immediately. We’ll display a date when your subscription will resume as well as send you a reminder email three days before your subscription will be unpaused.

Q.  Can I edit my comment on a post once I have published it?

A. Yes– if you’ve left a comment on a post and noticed a typo or want to change what you wrote, you can edit the comment.

1. Select the three dots underneath your comment and select “Edit”.

2. Once you make your change, an edit status with a time stamp will appear next to your name on the comment.

Edits can only be made shortly after posting a comment. If you do not see the “edit comment” option, the window to make changes has passed.
